Earth Day. Every Day. Will you take the Monthly 22nd Challenge?
On Earth Day 2010, I remember someone making a comment about the hype of Earth Day. His point was everyone seemed to feel they were doing so much if they attended a one-day-a-year Earth Day event. Or pitching in once a year on Make a Difference Day. These are great events, but his point was we should be pitching in on a regular basis. I agree!
As Earth Day is always celebrated on the 22nd, he suggested using the 22nd of each month as a reminder to do something special. I LIKE that idea and I'm running with it. I'm issuing:
The Monthly 22nd Challenge
Using the 22nd as a reminder, what can we each do? Look around as you go through your day. In what way can you do something extra to reduce, reuse, recycle? Can you reduce your energy or water consumption or single use plastic?
What about litter? Do you encounter litter everywhere you go, like I do? Can you pick up 22 pieces of litter? Can you pick up everything in a 22 foot radius? Can you pick up litter for 22 minutes or even 22 seconds?
This is litter I just picked up at the beach between the shore and the high tide line for about 22 minutes.
At first glance our beach looks very clean. It is only when you start paying attention that you notice lots and lots of small, almost invisible, debris. Some of the pieces are very tiny pieces of plastic or cigarette butts. They are really the worst... small enough to be easily ingested, but not digested, by wildlife, causing birds, fish and turtles to die. This may not be a lot picked up, but every single piece is important.
Every litter bit hurts. Every little bit helps. And, everyday is Earth Day!
I'd love to hear from YOU . Why do you think people litter? Do you have ideas about how we can start a conversation about litter to make those who are unaware more conscious? Please share your ideas and experience. *LIKE* us on Facebook. If you take photos I invite you to post them on Facebook's Museum of Litter page.
If you're on Twitter, follow @MuseumofLitter. Together we can #twitterlittteraway.
* I wish I'd remember who's idea using the 22nd was so I could give credit. If it was you or you know who it was, please let me know so I can give credit where credit is due. Thanks and Happy Earth Day!
I love the idea of this and I want to build a plan for 2014 for the 22nd Challenge. Awesome idea!

Starting out with an update for Jay Sean fans, if you missed his exclusive interview on this blog, now's a good time as any to catch up. The man of the moment was live on the Ellen DeGeneres show Monday afternoon. For those of us who were not among the lucky few who knew ahead of time, or just happened to find him while flipping channels, you can watch the video below. It's a pretty popular tune, judging by the amount of airplay it's receiving and iTunes downloads (among the top downloaded tracks). All of these are great achievements and I'm sure Jay Sean and his team are ecstatic with the response. But more than anything, it breaks stereotypes about South Asian musicians and artists. so this definitely is a good start!

I am up for the challenge! I pick litter at least twice weekly and will endeavor to do something extra special near the 22nd of each month. Thanks for the great suggestion.

Thanks, Eef, for checking it out and your kind comment. I hope we can pick up litter together one day :-)
Eef is a litter-picking virtual friend from Facebook. She's doing great work keeping her part of the planet clean in Belgium. Check out her Facebook page called PEACEFUL PROTEST AGAINST LITTER and her blog http://peacefulprotestagainstlitter.blogspot.com. I reasonate with the peaceful approach she advocates. She shares from her heart, informs and inspires.
