In honor of Earth Day 2011 the Museum of Litter would like to share a piece of our art upcycled from litter with one lucky winner.  

The Museum of Litter picked up one city block worth of littered cigarette butts in a strip mall parking lot in the 3000 block of East Commercial Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL, 33308. 

 Picking up all the butts took 50 minutes. How many butts do you think were picked up in 50 minutes?
 
 

The person who guesses correctly wins an original, custom piece of art made from these cigarette butts. Winner may choose from the following designs:

Earth Day. Every Day. Will you take the Monthly 22nd Challenge?

On Earth Day 2010, I remember someone making a comment about the hype of Earth Day. His point was everyone seemed to feel they were doing so much if they attended a one-day-a-year Earth Day event. Or pitching in once a year on Make a Difference Day. These are  great events, but his point was we should be pitching in on a regular basis. I agree!

As Earth Day is always celebrated on the 22nd, he suggested using the 22nd of each month as a reminder to do something special. I LIKE that idea and I'm running with it. I'm issuing:

The Monthly 22nd Challenge
Using the 22nd as a reminder, what can we each do? Look around as you go through your day. In what way can you do something extra to reduce, reuse, recycle? Can you reduce your energy or water consumption or single use plastic?
 

What about litter? Do you encounter litter everywhere you go, like I do? Can you pick up 22 pieces of litter? Can you pick up everything in a 22 foot radius? Can you pick up litter for 22 minutes or even 22 seconds?

This is litter I just picked up at the beach between the shore and the high tide line for about 22 minutes. 
  
At first glance our beach looks very clean. It is only when you start paying attention that you notice lots and lots of small, almost invisible, debris. Some of the pieces are very tiny pieces of plastic or cigarette butts. They are really the worst... small enough to be easily ingested, but not digested, by wildlife, causing birds, fish and turtles to die. This may not be a lot picked up, but every single piece is important.

Every litter bit hurts. Every little bit helps. And, everyday is Earth Day!

If we'd just pick up litter we'd all get along

Litter and clutter contribute to discrimination according to a recently published article in the journal Science.

The mind seems to like things orderly. When it encounters people in a messy environment it begins to sort and classify, noting differences, increasing the chance of stereotyping.

Scientists find people of different races sit further away from each other in dirty, disorderly environments.

Who would think that the simple act of picking up litter could end with world peace?

Just goes to show little things mean a lot.
