First Thank You card handed to litterer
I handed out my first 'Thank You for your donation card' directly to a litterer yesterday. That was fun! (See card on home page. You can download a free pdf file of card for your own use. Try it. It's really fun!)
The gentleman and another man were working out of a truck parked on the side of the road. As I backed out of a parking spot, I saw him pitch his finished cigarette. I got out of my car with a Thank You card, camera and zip lock plastic bag. As I walked over to the litter I warmly said hello and bent down to take a closeup of the butt on the pavement. I could feel his eyes on me and as I began to pick up the butt, I looked directly at him and asked if he minded if I took it. He seemed dumbfounded, shook his head no, so I bagged it, got up, walked over to him and handed him the card and said, "Thank you so much for your donation."
He immediately began reading the card which says, "Thank You for your donation to the Museum of Litter. Without your support the museum would cease to exist. You may view your contribution online at: www.MuseumofLitter.org."
He continued reading as I returned to my car so I assume he turned the card over and read the back which gives the time it takes commonly littered items to decompose. As I drove off, I rolled down my window, gave a friendly wave, thanked him again and wished him a great day.
What he does with his next cigarette butt is his choice. But, at least, it will be a well-informed choice.

What a perfect act of ocean kindness. I've been searching for a way to get the attention of two fishermen who have been tossing their empty beer cans onto the beach and spreading bad karma up and down our local salmon fishing spot.......Thanks for the inspiring idea Sharon!

You are one brave lady, Sharon! You just never know what kind of a reaction you will get from people. Great job! Hopefully he will think about what he is doing the next time and tell his friends!
