Will Harry help save the planet?
A few weeks ago Gary (G) was metal detecting on the beach. He noticed a group of teenagers leave all their Burger King food and drink wrappers on the ground and start to leave. As they passed G a boy came up and asked if could find the high school ring he'd just lost in the sand. G told him he would try, and made a deal. If G could return his ring the kid would agree not to litter. G has been looking for the ring for days.
G made a new metal-detecting buddy on the beach who's here on vacation. Harry has a super-duper metal detector, I mean, it even talks to you and tells you the denomination of the coin you find or if it's jewelry. Gary's detector is just a starter model I got him for Christmas and he's not finding the really good stuff. Other tourists asked for Gary's help and told him where they lost jewelry, but he never found their items. Gary passed the info on to Harry, and Harry FOUND the gold chain and the ring, right in the spot Gary told him. Well, this morning, Harry found the high school ring!
He showed the ring to Gary and then pocketed it....! Gary asked to be able to return it to the local teenager but Harry declined. I called Harry to appeal to his higher nature. My points to Harry were 1) it would give this kid a reason to have faith in humanity for the rest of his life and 2) maybe the kid would actually stop littering as a result of their interaction. "Harry," I said, "Give the ring back and it will be good for the planet!" Harry likes to display his collections on a shelf. I offered to frame a picture of the boy receiving the ring to place on his shelf. Harry hemmed and hawed and finally said he'd think about it. Harry leaves tomorrow morning at 6 am.
