City College Ft. Ld Students to the Rescue - 6/4/11 Lauderdale by the Sea, FL
I knew our town's monthly beach cleanup at 9am Saturday would be poorly attended to due a memorial service at 10am for Diane Boutin. Diane, whose familys business is the Windjammer Resort, was passionately involved with Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and had made many, many friends in town. The normal volunteers would surely be getting ready for her memorial and wouldn't be able to attend the cleanup. Since I live close enough to do both I thought it would be important to support the cleanup.
You guys saved the day!
Thank you City College for caring and doing something positive and proactive for the community and the environment. Your efforts are appreciated.
Around 4:30-5, at low-tide, I picked up again. I collected another three full bags from the shore of plastic that fortunately will not make it to the Atlantic Garbage Patch. In LBTS we have recycling containers next to the trash (Yeah LBTS: Clean and Green!) and you can see from the picture how many plastic bottles and cans will be able to be recycled.
Until we can prevent littering we have to pick it up. The real key, though, is litter-prevention. How do we engage and educate litterers to stop littering? Any ideas? Would love to hear your thoughts.
